Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection following established protocols.
- Label, handle, store, and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis accurately.
- Ensure proper documentation and tracking of collected specimens.
- Maintain patient comfort and safety during all procedures.
- Conduct basic screening procedures such as blood pressure measurement, blood glucose testing (finger-prick), body mass index (BMI) measurement, total cholesterol, lipogram, HB testing (finger-pick), urine dipsticks testing, pregnancy testing, and vital signs as required.
- Record and report screening results accurately in patient records.
- Verify patient identity and explain procedures clearly to ensure informed consent.
- Provide reassurance and professional support to patients, including children and anxious individuals.
- Address patient questions and concerns in a courteous and confidential manner.
- Adhere to infection prevention and control standards at all times.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Dispose of sharps and biohazard waste according to clinic policy and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Prepare phlebotomy equipment and screening tools before procedures.
- Monitor and report stock levels of consumables and supplies.
- Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of equipment where applicable.
- Accurately document procedures and results in electronic or paper medical records.
- Comply with clinic policies, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Support clinic workflow and collaborate with healthcare professionals as needed.
- Maintain housekeeping in accordance with Dis-Chem standards and ensure workstation cleanliness.
- Adhere to Dis-Chem Policies and Procedures and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Adhere to Health and Safety rules and regulations.
- Adhere to Dis-Chem Uniform and personal appearance policy.
Requirements
- Grade 12/Matric
- Certificate or Diploma in Phlebotomy or related health care field
- Minimum of 2-5 years' experience in a private clinic or primary healthcare setting
- Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) systems
- Basic life support (BLS) or first aid certification
- Proven competency in venipuncture and capillary blood collection
- Computer literate – MS Office
- Willing and able to work retail hours
- South African citizen
- MIE, no criminal record and clear credit rating
- Driver's license and own reliable transport
- Understanding of infection control and patient safety principles
- Ability to work independently and as part of a healthcare team
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and ethical standards
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and general comfort with digital systems
