The Role
As a Specialist Credit Analyst at Absa Group, you will play a pivotal role in conducting in-depth, specialized credit assessments and risk analysis on commercial portfolios. This position is central to enhancing the decision-making process involved in determining the Bank's appetite to extend credit to clients across diverse industries and markets. You will be working within a dynamic team environment, collaborating closely with Sales teams, Credit departments, Product Industry Specialists, and senior management to deliver comprehensive financial analysis and risk evaluations.
This role offers the opportunity to work with some of Africa's most prominent commercial clients, analyzing complex financial statements, interpreting qualitative data, and providing critical insights that drive lending decisions. What You'll Do
- Monitor client performance continuously for risk indicators and perform formal reviews at specified intervals to identify changes in business or operating environments
- Monitor adherence to covenants and conditions on an ongoing basis, discussing deviations with Sales teams and escalating to Line Management and Credit when necessary
- Ensure adherence to ARMS credit requirements as stipulated in Absa credit policies and monitor operational risk boundaries
- Collaborate with Product Industry Specialists to assist in client solutioning and credit application processes
- Proactively identify problematic and high-risk clients, advising Credit teams and implementing loss preventative measures including EWL Reports
- Manage and action daily Odex, Referrals, REPL and REPC processes, contacting clients on referral listings for rectification
- Compile comprehensive reviews, amendments, and new applications for appropriate lending authorities
- Spread client financials across various Credit Risk Grading models including Agri Model, Public Sector Model, RiskCalc Model and Triad
- Provide Default Grading output from Credit Risk models and ensure 100% accuracy in data capture and model balancing
- Issue facility letters to clients following reviews and new facility approvals, managing policy-required reminder letters
- Identify cross-sell opportunities through analysis of client financials and account conduct, passing leads to Relationship Executives
- Conduct industry research to understand profitability trends, market dynamics, and competitive positioning of portfolio clients
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Commerce, Management Studies, or Credit Risk
- Minimum 5 years of relevant credit analysis or risk management experience
- Strong financial analysis skills with ability to interpret complex financial statements
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel for financial modeling
- Deep understanding of banking credit policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
- Experience with credit risk grading models and default probability assessments
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for report writing and stakeholder interaction
- Demonstrated planning and organizational abilities with attention to detail
- Knowledge of commercial banking products and lending structures
- Understanding of South African banking regulations and compliance requirements
Nice to Have
- Professional certification in Credit Risk Management (CRM) or similar qualification
- Experience with specialized banking software and risk management systems
- Knowledge of multiple African markets and cross-border banking
- Industry expertise in key commercial sectors such as agriculture, mining, or manufacturing
- Previous experience in deal structuring or syndicated lending
- Fluency in additional African languages
